CLUTCH TROUBLESHOOTING

CLUTCH SLIPPAGE

PROBABLE CAUSE

CORRECTION

Lack of free pedal

Re-adjust per instructions

Release mechanism binding

Check release mechanism and linkage; lube if necessary

Replace with new clutch assembly; find and repair cause of grease or oil contamination

Grease or oil on clutch facings

Worn clutch facings

Replace with new clutch assembly

Weak pressure springs

Replace with new clutch assembly

Overloaded clutch

Review application to ensure that proper clutch was installed

NOISY CLUTCH

PROBABLE CAUSE

CORRECTION

Clutch release bearing lacks lubricant or damaged

Lubricate if a zerk fitting or replace clutch assembly

Flywheel pilot bearing lacks lubricant or damaged

Lubricate or replace with new bearings

Adjust clutch per instructions; check wear on cross shafts, bell housing bushings and release yoke; replace if necessary

Clutch release bearing housing hitting flywheel ring

Wrong tolerance between drive slots and drive lugs on pressure plates

Clearance should be no less than 006”

POOR CLUTCH RELEASE

PROBABLE CAUSE

CORRECTION

Clutch adjustment not correct

Re-check adjustment per instructions

Replace pilot bearing and ensure proper seating in flywheel and tolerance to input shaft

Flywheel pilot bearing bound in flywheel or on input shaft

Damaged clutch release bearing

Replace with new clutch assembly

Reposition release shaft so it does not project; check bell housing bushings, cross shafts and release yoke for wear

Clutch release shaft projecting through release yoke

Release yoke hitting cover assembly at full release position Replace release yoke with proper yoke Release yoke not aligned properly with release bearing

Check flywheel has not been resurfaced more than the 060” maximum Check drive pins are 90° to flywheel surface and minimum 006” clearance between drive pins & center plate slots

Intermediate plate sticking on drive lugs (14” angle spring — 2 plate assemblies only)

Pressure plate not retracting fully

Check pressure plate drive lugs for 006” clearance

Worn splines on input shaft of transmission

Replace input shaft and check disc hubs for excess wear

Cleaning disc is not effective; check for leak causing contamination; replace clutch assembly

Disc facings contaminated with oil or grease
