TECH TIPS REGENERATION
The DPF needs to be cleaned regularly through a process called regeneration — either active, passive or forced. Accumulated soot is burnt off at high temperature to leave only a residue of ash, effectively renewing or regenerating the filter, ready to take on more pollution from the exhaust stream. • Passive Regeneration occurs at lower temperatures under steady driving conditions. Nitrogen Dioxide is created in the DOC to react with soot trapped in the DPF. • Active Regeneration occurs at higher temperatures, typically using Oxygen to react with trapped soot. To reach the exhaust temperatures needed for active regeneration, diesel fuel is injected before the DOC substrate, oxidizing the fuel to create heat. • Forced, stationary, or parked Regeneration is similar to active regeneration but takes place while the equipment is stationary and not being operated.
