DPFs NEED TO BE CLEANED REGULARLY THROUGH REGENERATION Soot accumulated in DPFs is burnt off at a high tempurature to leave only a residue of ash, effectively renewing or regenerating the filter so it may continue to take on pollution from the exhaust system Regeneration can be done in three ways: • Passive — occurs at low temperatures under steady driving conditions, using nitrogen dioxide in the DOC to react with the trapped soot • Active — occurs at high temperatures, typically using oxygen to react with the trap soot to quickly burn it off. Diesel fuel is injected before the DOC substrate, oxidizing the fuel to create more heat. • Forced — similar to Active regeneration, but takes place while the equipment is stationary and not being operated (also known as parked or stationary regeneration)
